GIVING BIRTH IN NIGERIA
Today the 20th of FEBRUARY 2020. The first lady of kebbi state, H.E Dr. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu attended a multi stakeholder meeting hosted by a team from Nigeria Health watch, AfriCare and EpiAfrica. With the theme: catalyzing accountability for maternal death in kebbi state, the meeting was aimed at proffering solutions to the issue of maternal mortality in Kebbi state.
Nigeria Health Watch is an organization that uses informed advocacy and communication to influence health policy and seek better health and access to healthcare in Nigeria.
Through its various platforms, Nigeria Health Watch provides informed commentary and in-depth analysis of health issues in Nigeria.
GivingBirthInNigeria is a campaign that was started by the Nigerian Health Watch along with EpiAfric and Africare to spark up action on the part of policymakers in order to better the condition of maternal and child health across the country.
While addressing the participants her excellency, said that the Kebbi State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu has shown a lot of support to women. Kebbi State is the only state with at least one female councilor per LGA.
In her words: “I have instructed wives of local government chairmen to embark on regular engagement with rural women with a view to creating awareness on utilization of MNCH services such as immunization and ANC” she adds that the solution to most of these problems remains education. Research has shown that if all mothers in Africa complete just primary education, maternal deaths would be reduced by 70%, saving up to 50,000 lives annually.
Causes of maternal deaths in Kebbi are similar to those in other North-Western states she said, adding that Socio-economic factors such as low education, poverty, and lack of financial independence contribute to the three delays associated with maternal mortality
Quality maternal health should be seen as the right of every woman and not a mere privilege. We have lamented enough; it is now time to act!
She declared her intention to use the state maternal and child health intervention center (SEMCHIC) of the state primary healthcare development agency to engage women, traditional rulers with the aim of creating awareness on the dangers of home delivery.
As a pediatrician and wife to the Governor, I have accepted to champion the advocacy for improved maternal and child health in the state. This I have started with forming my own army made up of wives of chairmen, female councilors and wives of male councilors. - HE Dr. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu
