THE NEGLECT OF BIRNIN KEBBI, KEBBI STATE

THE NEGLECT OF BIRNIN KEBBI.

Birnin KEBBI, the headquarters of Gwandu Emirate and Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area as well as the Capital of Kebbi State, has become a victim of betrayal, power play and envy, which has led to its present state of underdevelopment in comparison with its peers.
The major road, Ahmadu Bello, way is continuously being reconstructed years after its dualization during the military era. There is neither a business District, nor any state of the art sporting or conference facilities. The Hospital where I was born in the sixties is still the number one medical facility managed by the State Health Ministry. It is of interest to observe that the school of nursing is the only high institution owned by the state which is located in the state capital. The money - guzzling Airport is situated near the farm of the Governor that initiated the project. The Umaru Waziri Federal Polytechnic, was initially a state government owned institution which we inherited from Sokoto. Instead of our then Governor to upgrade it to a University of Science and Technology, he,instead handed it over to the Federal Government, collected 500 million Naira and went ahead to site the State University in his village! He left a town which had a Secondary School nearly 100 years old by then, old but functional public utilities for an insecure and obscure village just to satisfy his ego. His successor, another villager with deceptive looks, followed suit. He established a state polytechnic and located it in his remote village. He moved the NYSC orientation camp which was in the strategically located town of Jega, to his roots once again. The State Capital only got all the major educational and health institutions courtesy of the Federal Government. Allah Ya isa!
